On 02/26/2020 at the Radisson Blu hotel, UNFPA Algeria office shared the results of the qualitative study on “The Promotion of Women's Rights and Men's Perception of Violence Based on Gender in Algeria ”.

As per the latest  2018-2019 partnership between UNFPA Algeria and the British Embassy in Algeria. This workshop has taken place to gather  representatives of the United Nations system, diplomatic missions and civil society organizations , as well as the national implementing partner IRISCO, and the international entity Promundo.

The workshop program focused on the presentation of the project, the synthesis of the results of the study conducted with 8 Discussion Focus Group (FGDs) and 8 in-depth Interviews. Participants of both genders were chosen from different ages, professions and social backgrounds to contribute to these discussions about  the roles and responsibilities of men and women, and their perception of violence.

Ms. Ouahiba Sakani, Representative Assistant and in charge of the UNFPA Office briefly explained the project steps starting  from the recruitment of the required expertise, the methodology, the conduct of the  interviews in the field, ending with the issuance of the report by the Promundo team in June 2019.

The results can be summarized under the following headings: 1) Men, Women and Honor; 2) Men, Women and Work; 3) Gender roles in family life; 4) Determinants of gender inequality; and 5) Gender-Based Violence in private and public spaces.

She also shared the lessons learned from this study, challenges to established social norms, and the opportunities extracted from thecollected information  for other operational research in order to advocate on gender equality, and to better support national policies and programs.

Following the presentation of the results, a debate allowed the participants to express their opinion, and to reiterate the need to work with stakeholders, including men, to achieve the change in social norms and prevent gender based violence.
