This review assesses the extent to which national ageing strategies in six Arab countries: Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates, are in line with human rights principles and standards. Findings of the assessment show that although the progress achieved, still there are significant gaps. While they address some elements of the rights covered, they do not address all of them.

This assessment aims to encourage Arab countries both to establish national ageing strategies, if not yet done, and update those that do exist and make them easily accessible to the public.

The conclusions drawn from this analysis provide policymakers in all countries in the region with a knowledge tool to advance the implementation of the International Conference of Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action, and to ensure that the needs of different population groups are equitably addressed.
